SLUGGISH RIVER.

MEETING OF NEW BOARD

The first meeting of the newly appointed Sluggish River Board was held yesterday, when there were present Trustees F. J. Foster, M. J. Ryan, E. C. Print, A. N. Morcom, and W. H. Gimblett.

On the motion of Mr Ryan, seconded by Mr Print, Mr Foster, the retiring chairman, was re-elected to the position, both the mover and seconder paying a tribute to the time Mr Foster had devoted to the ratepayers’ interests, Mr Foster thanked members in turn for the support they had accorded him and extended a welcome to the new member (Mr Gimblett). The speaker stated that he could not but express regret that the board had lost the services of Air H. J. Lancaster, who had been a very worthy member. However, in Mr Gimblett, be felt that the ratepayers would be again fittingly represented.

A financial statement was tabled by the clerk (Mr R. H. Spencer) for the remaining portion of the year to March 31, 1935, which showed that the estimated expenditure was £660 8s 4d -—an excess of approximately £220 over the income. A request was received from the Buchanan Estate for assistance in improving their private drains. —It was resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the chairman and Trustees Gimblett and Ryan, with power to act, but without the power to commit the board to any expense. _ The overseer (Mr W. Locke) reported that since the last meeting the Taikorea drain had been cleaned to Messrs Cooper and Greenaway’s, and tlso to Messrs Cooper and Greenaway s from th© outlet to Mr Lancaster s boundary. One mile of Lane’s drain bad been cleaned, and be bad removed grass from the macrocarpa trees.— Adopted. On the motion of Air Ryan, seconded by Air Print, the Kopane School Committee was voted 5s for the use of the school on the election day. The clerk was instructed to forward a letter of thanks to the school committee and to the Rangiotu Dairy Coy. for the use of facilities on the same day. Accounts amounting to £l6 3s were passed for payment.
