THE OAKS.

WON BY VARIANT. RACING AT RICCARTON. CHRISTCHURCH. Nov. 7. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s metropolitan meeting was continued at Riccarton to-oday in fine, bright weather, but a fresh easterly breeze was rather cool. Only four runners contested the Oaks Stakes for threo-ycar-old fillies, and the race was won easily by tho Christchurchowned and trained Variant, who was bred by Mr G. M. Currie, of Koatanui Stud. Sporting Blood continued his winning sequence in the Canterbury Cup, and the Jockey Club Handicap fell to Sweet Agnes, who was making her first appearance at tho meeting. The track was firm and fast. The attendance was smaller than on either of tho two previous days, but was good for an off day. Tho totalisator investments were £20,714, compared with £22,414 on tho third day last year, a decrease of £1700; this was due to the poor field in the Oaks. Tho increase so far on tho meeting is £7648. , , The pleasure of tho day s racing was marred by an accident in the running of tho Jockey Club Handicap, in which Manetho fell after going little more than a furlong. The accident was duo to Manetho getting on to the heels of The Masquerader, and a judicial inquiry found that nobody was blameworthy, but unfortunately A. 11.
