WAIATA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) AVALVTA, Nov. 5.

An interesting afternoon was spent at Waiata on Saturday, when Mrs McCorkindalc, of Foilding, was a visitor for the monthly meeting of tho Women’s Institute and gave a demonstration on tho art of making pottery. Several beautiful pieces of finished work were exhibited, as well as some in different stages of completion, and Mrs McCorkindale described every detail of tho work. She also exhibited numerous samples of arts and crafts made by institute members both in New Zealand and England, and at the-close of her remarks was accorded a vote of thanks. Airs A. O. Simpson presided over a good attendance, and congratulated the institute on winning tlio shield for tho potato-growing competition. Ono new member, Miss Jean Rcdshaw, was welcomed and a pleasing little ceremony. was performed when the president also welcomed two new institute babies, tho tiny twin sons of Mrs E. Billett, who were both presented with a money box. A letter of resignation from Airs D. Weston, who is leaving the district, was received with regret, ■ and : a small token of remembrance is being forwarded to her, with a money box for her little daughter. A roll-call for a helpful quotation was well responded to, and a competition for the best dress not costing more than five shillings was won by Airs R. W. Brown, Aliss Brown being second and Airs Bailey and Aliss Dawson equal, third. Several members brought plants for exchange, which proved a popular idea to garden lovers. Afternoon tea was served by tho hostesses, Airs Simpson and Alisses Brown and Dawson. , At tho December meeting there will be a Christmas bring and buy stall, and a competition for the best article made from one yard of cretonne. The roll-call will bo for a Christmas dinner menu and the meeting will take the form of a social afternoon.

Tho rainfall -for the month of October, as reported by Air R. AV. Brown, was 3.34 inches, this being only a little below the average since 1913, which is 4.23 inches. The highest rainfall for tho month of October was recorded in the year 1920, with tho rain gauge registering 8.57 inches, while the lowest rainfall was in 1931, 1.5 inches.
