3.45 P.M. EDITION

ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY AWARD

MASTERTON, Nov. C. A Royal Humane Society award has been made to Misses Z. and D. Pickering (now Mrs K. Ingley), in recognition of their gallant though unsuccessful attempt to rescue Mr Montague Tocker, who was drowned at Lake Ferry on March 30 last. Considerable pluck and endurance was displayed by both girls. When Mr Tocker was seen to be ni difficulties, Miss Z. Pickering at once plunged into the icy water and was followed quickly by her sister. They struggled to within about thirty yards of the beach with the drowning man. Weakened by their efforts and hampered by their clothing and tlie coldness of the water, however, they were twice dragged under, and eventually had to release their hold on Mr Tocker. The girls were assisted from the water in a state of exhaustion.
