FOXTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Aug. 3. Death removed a popular resident of the district this week in tho person of Mr A. R. Bailey, of Motuiti. Ho was 39 years of ago and was engaged in farming. He became ill last Tuesday morning and friends persuaded him to enter tho Palmerston North Hospital later in the day. He did so, but died two hours after admission. Mr Bailey was a single man, a son of Mr and Mrs W. R. Bailey, of Haitaitai, Wellington. He was a member of tho Oroua Downs Sports Club and took an interest in all sport and social activities of the district. He was gassed at tho War and his death was due to its after effects. Messrs F. Gay and G. Irwin were admitted to tho Palmerston North Hospital on Thursday afternoon. Mr E. Robinson, also of Foxton, who is an inmate of the institution, is making good progress towards recovery. At the monthly social afternoon of All Saints’ Ladies’ Guild the hostesses were Mcfdamcs Austin, Thane, Hunt, Mason, J. Robinson, Middleton, and Edwards. Mrs Symons, president of the guild, inado feeling reference to the death of Mrs do Ridder, a motion of sympathy being extended to the relatives. Competitions were held and afternoon tea was served. An onjoyablo social evening was held in the Methodist Sunday schoolroom by the Methodist boys’ Bible class The evening took tho form a “Mad Hatters’ social,” and many quairj* and original hats were worn. Tho prize for the most original fiat was won by Miss J. Young, with Mr D. Chrystall second.
