PAHIATUA BOWLING CLUB.

YEAR REVIEWED. “The club’s finances are quite sound, in fact probably in as good a position as in any previous year,” says the 3oth annual report of the Pahiatua Rowling Club. “All expenses were paid promptly and there is a larger credit balance than last year. It will be quite realised, however, that the incoming committee will have to go as carefully as its predecessors as there are some liabilities which will have to be faced sooner or later. The new scale of fees, with a rebate tor payment by December 31, proved a huge success, at all events as far as the treasurer was concerned as he had on no occasion to look for funds to pay current liabilities. The 1933-34 season was most favourable as regards weather, and the green was right through the season in most excellent condition, exciting the favourable comments of all visitors. Our thanks for this are due to our green-keeper, Mr A. Baxter, and to the green committee, headed by its chairman, Air J. E. Murphy. Where so many assisted in so many ways, it is perhaps invidious to mention names, but we think it only right that Messrs J. E. Murphy and W. Britland should he especially mentioned. Our thanks are tendered to all those who worked at different times in any way on or about the green, to the ladies for their assistance on many occasions, in fact to all those ladies who give us pleasure by visiting the green at any time, to the Pahiatua Herald and ‘Manawatu Standard’ for their reports and generous allowance of space, and to our representatives on the Manawatu Centre. Messrs N. H. Nash and R. H. Henderson. Right at the beginning of the season we sustained an irreparable loss by the death of one of the oldest members of the club, Mr H. Pearcey, and to his relations we tender our sincerest sympathy. Wo were very pleased to see on the green occasionally two very old members, Messrs John Hughes and Jacob Manson. The former took part in several games, with all his old zest, but the latter could not be induced to do so. One face we missed —Air Alacßratney—and to him we tender our sympathy in his illness with the hope of his recovery to health so that we may once more welcome him on the green. “The club competitions were played off very successfully and without any undue rush at the end of the season. The singles championship was won for the second time in succession by Air E. Britland, to whom wc extend our warmest congratulations as we do also to the winners of the other competitions: Senior pairs, Alessrs A. Baxter and E. Walker; junior singles, Air V. Boynes; junior pairs, Alessrs Gnsford and Grantham, and senior-jun-ior pairs, Alessrs C. Peterson and W. J. A 1 ills. The club was represented at the Ruahine Pennants competition at Woodville, and was successful in retaining the Senior Pennants. We were once again unsuccessful in the Junior Pennant competition, but this is not to be wondered at so !t)iig as we retain our procedure of raising the junior players to senior rank so much more quickly than do the other clubs. We entered challenges for several of the trophies under the Aianawatu Centre, but although we met with a. fair amount of success the only trophy we hold at the present time is the Oxley Cup. The club was represented at the Easter tournament by three rinks, and the one skipped by Air E. Britland put up an excellent performance, getting into the post-section play, and being only narrowly deleaved by the ultimate winners. The rink was Alessrs It. Pilkinton, J. Swanney, G. Kershaw and E. Britland (skip). The Kelsey Seals were, as usual, keenly contested many times, and afforded many a Saturday’s good and enjoyable game. The competitions for "other trophies, however, the Ferns, Feathers and Buckles, seem to have fallen in abeyance. The usual home and home visits were paid to Oroua, Dannevirke, AYoodville and Eketahuna, and on all occasions most enjoyable afternoons were spent, except in the case of our visit to Dannevirke when, unfortunately, it rained heavily and no play was possible.”
