DOMINION’S FINANCES.

ESTIMATE OF DEFICIT UNALTERED.

Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, May 24. The statement that nothing had occurred since his recent forecast to indicate that the Budget deficit would be lower than his previous estimate of £700,000 was made by Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates to-night. He though the figure previously mentioned was approximately correct, and he did not expect any reduction.

Asked whether he thought the financial position of the country justified an increase in the salaries of civil servants, Mr Coates said he saw no immediate prospect of the restoration of any portion of the “cuts.”
