AAIATEUR ROAD RACE. Sixteen competitors faced the startef in yesterday’s road race conducted by the Alanawatu Amateur Cycling Club, the course being to Bulls and return, a distance of 38 miles. On the outward journey they were required to ride into a head wind, and although the front markers were still in the lead at the turn the virtual scratch riders, R. Walker, G. Little and N. Hyde, who were off the 3min. mark, had closed up considerably. In a fast run home Walker and Hyde overhauled the 81 min. men at Alount Stewart. The limit men were still riding well at this stage, and Esau (12min.) broke away from his co-markers about two miles from home to hold off Walker by half a wheel. N. The Boucher Cup series, run under the auspicies of the Counties’ Cash Cycling Club, will he advanced a further stage on Saturday when a race to Feilding and return over a course of 24 miles will he conducted. A meeting of the Canterbury Amateur Cycling Centre decided to apply for permission to make the Round the Gorges race of 100 miles a New Zealand championship event. It was resolved to protest against the race between Palmerston North and Wellington being made the annual 100 miles championship event, the centre favouring the championship being decided alternately in the North and South Islands.
