Born at Gulen, Germany, Mrs Zeinert was married on September 16, 1881, her husband having followed the occupation of a cabinetmaker in that town. However, two years later Mr Zeinert decided to try his fortune overseas and, after proceeding from Hamburg to London, the young couple embarked on the steamer Ruapehu, the original vessel of that name, at Plymouth. Auckland was their port of disembarkation on arrival in New Zealand waters and Mr and Mrs Zeinert transferred to a coastal vessel for the trip to Wellington, completing the final stages of their journey on the Queen of tire South, which carried them to Foxton. For a brief period after their arrival in Palmerston North they occupied a house on the banks of the Manawatu River, where the Esplanade is now situated, but Mr Zeinert then purchased an area of land in College Street which has been their home ever since. Like many other colonists, Mr Zeinert was unable to follow his regular calling in Iris adopted land and one of his earliest jobs was felling a 100-acre block of bush for Mr Forster-Pratt at Fitzlierbert, in company with three others. Of recent years Mrs Zeinert had suffered ill-health and for five weeks prior to her death she was confined to her bed, the life partnership of over half a century being broken on Monday.
