FAMOUS GOLFER’S DEATH.

ANDREW KIRKALDY. LONDON, April 16. The death is announced of Andrew Kirkaldy, the veteran golf professional, at the age of 74. Destined to become one of the greatest of the older school of golfers in Britain, Andrew Kirkaldy was horn at Denhead on March 8, 1860. Formerly engaged at Winchester, he was latterly professional to the Royal and Ancient Club at St. Andrews. He tied for the open championship in 1889, and lost on the replay, -was second in 1879 and 1891, third in 1895 and 1899, fourth in 1893, sixth in 1904, seventh in 1897. In a match over four courses (Musselburgh, St. Andrews, Prestwick, and Troon) in 1891, he beat Willie Park by Bup and 7. In 1895, J. H. Taylor, then champion, challenged the world for £SO a side for two rounds over St. Andrews. Kirkaldy accepted and beat Taylor by one hole. In 1911 he was beaten by Ben Sayers in a 72-holes match over Sunningdale and Walton Heath for £SO by 6 and 5. He has played St. Andrews old course in 71, and 71 and 72 —143. He played for Scotland against England m 1904, 1905, 1909, 1910, and was chosen in 1908, but no match took place owing to the weather conditions. He has done the eighth and eleventh holes at St. Andrews (twice) and the home hole at Musselburgh each in one stroke.
