RELIEF OF DISTRESS.
LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT FUNDS. ALLOCATIONS "NOT PENALISED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 18. An unqualified denial was given today by Mr J. S. Jessep, deputy-chair-man of the Unemployment Board, to the telegraphed statement from Ashburton that the board penalised the allocations of centres which made efforts to raise funds locally to assist the unemployed. . A reporter was shown the official notes of the proceedings at a meeting last month between a delegation from the Municipal Conference and the Government. The notes record that a denial was given at that time by the deputy-chairman of the board, who was present. In reiterating the denial, Mr Jessep points out that the Ashburton Mayor was present at the meeting referred to. ... Mr Jessep said he hoped, m fairness to the unemployed in other municipalities, they would note the unfounded nature of the Ashburton statement and not, on account of that statement, abandon a.ny measures during the coming winter for distress relief.
