ENJOYED THE WORK.
PEER’S DAUGHTER AS SPY. The will of Hon. Penelope Magdalene Bovill, daughter of the first Lord Basing, who died recently at the age of 68, solves a mystery and reveals her remarkable life story. Though she lived in a palatial house in Hans Place, Belgravia, London, she always was dressed in the meanest clothes. Her will states that since 1923 she has assisted the secret service of a Government which has investigated the doings of Communists in Russia and the Far East, where she travelled in disguise. In her will she wrote: —“I have lived dangerously, but enjoyed the work, especially as otherwise I would have led a sheltered,"colourless life.” Hon. Penelope Magdalene SclaterBooth was the second daughter of the first Baron Basing, who took his title from Basingstoke, Hampshire, which he represented in the House of Commons for many years, before being raised to the peerage in 1887, In 1886 she married Mr Charles A. Bovill, and had a son and two daughters, all of whom are living.
