WAR YEARS RECALLED.
AUSTRALIANS IN FRANCE. PARIS, April 6. The Mayor of Villers-Bretonneux, welcoming Australian representatives visiting the cemetery, said “Your children lie buried in ground hallowed by their gallantry 7. We revere their memory equally w-ith our own dead.” Mr Ferguson, one of the visiting Australians, said lie was amazed to see how rebuilding had changed the entire contour of the country from wha.t it was when be fought within half a mile of it. The Australians visited the various cemeteries and memorials on the battlefields.
The Australian visit is in connection with the sixteenth anniversary of the heroic defence of Villers-Breton-neux by Australian troops against the German drive. At the ceremony the Victorian Agent-General, Mr Richard Linton, w 7 as to have presented the Mayor w 7 ith an enlarged inscribed photograph of the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. The Mayor of VillersBretonneux is appealing for local subscriptions to defray the cost of recording the town’s gratitude to the Australians, the inscriptions to be made on the Rock of Remembrance within the shrine.
