LAWN TENNIS NOTES.

The single championships of the Palmerston North Club are now nearing conclusion. The form has worked out very truly with the result that the four leading men and the four leading ladies were the last left in their respective events. The men left in were Robertson, Boddv, Hankin and Wehipeihana, only tlie first-named having two lives intact, and unless there is a big upset of from Robertson should win the club championship for the second year. The last four ladies were Miss Margaret Rutherford with two lives, Miss N. Astle, Mrs Anderson and Mrs Beattie. The form pointed to Miss Rutherford and Mrs Anderson contesting the final and such has proved to be the case. Mrs Anderson beat Miss Astle in a very good match, both playing well, and then beat Mrs Beattie, but had to go to three sets to do so. Miss Rutherford has a decided pull, on Mrs Anderson for the club championship, for she has two lives to Mrs Anderson’s one. They have met twice this season and each has scored one victory. The mixed doubles w r ns won by Wilson and Miss Astle from Robertson and Miss Thompson, Wilson playing remarkably well and being well supported by his partner. The ladies’ doubles was won by Mrs Beattie and Miss Astle from Misses M. and L. Rutherford, the latter pair having won the Wairarapa championship. The final of the Wednesday competition between Palmerston North and Bulls was a very near thing, the sets being equal and Palmerston only winning on a majority, of games. The final of tho Saturday competition is due to be jxlayed at Levin today between Palmerston North, winners of the northern section, and Levin, winners of the southern section. The Palmerston men are much the stronger, but they are used to playing on grass and may not have such an easy task on asphalt as would appear likely. The Levin ladies, if in their full strength, are hard to beat, and last year were the main factor in Levin’s victory over Feilding.
