A GOOD DIVIDEND.

FIRST EVENT TO BLUE BLOOD. IN THE VAN THROUGHOUT. Bell Heather, the favourite for the Awapuni Handicap, in which all nine acceptors started, ruined her prospects by repeated breaking, and, although' running well half a mile from home, she again went into , the air. Meanwhile, Blue Blood had been trotting along very smoothly, and was never seriously threatened in the run home. Black Native was the early leader from Blue Blood, but the latter had taken charge passing through the straight, with the back marker, Earl Bingen gradually improving his position. Half a mile from home, Ohinemutu moved .forward and, although she had no prospect of overtaking Blue Blood, was threatening Earl Bingen when she broke under pressure, enabling the back marker to follow the winner home, although there was an interval of half a dozen lengths between them. Black Native also got up in time to beat Ohinemutu before she again settled down.

ANOTHER FAVOURITE BEATEN. JESTER’S WAY BARRED. Jester, the favourite from Guy Zolock for the Ladies’ Bracelet Handicap, did not go away very smoothly, but was quickly up with his field, only to get hemmed in On the rails. He did not work free, till about three furlongs from home, when his effort came too late for him to overhaul the leaders. Jean Parrish led Bara Gold, Guy Zolock and Florrio Real passing through the straight, the winners being well bunched Five furlongs from home Jean Parrish opened up an interval from Guy Zolock, but the latter closed up crossing the top to assume charge before the straight was reached, and held off a challenge by Jean Parrish over the final furlong to win by three lengths, with Orieigh Mills, who had held a prominent position throughout, third a similar distance back. Jester did not finish on strongly and there was another interval to him, with Super Tax and Florrie Real next to finish.

A WINNING BRACKET. AERIAL BOY PACES SMOOTHLY. The bracketed pair Aerial Boy and Arthur Chimes, the former having the services of the Belfast mentor, C. Donald, were installed favourite for the Pohangina Handicap, from which there were no withdrawals, and Aerial Boy registered a very smart performance to win nicely.

Peter’s Fault, who was on the front mark with Aerial Boy, dwelt slightly, and the latter went into the lead from Peter’s Fault and Storm Queen, the last-named having run. up fast, as they came across the top on the first time round. Going along the back Peter’s Fault made a bid to work on terms with the pacemaker, but Aerial Boy drew away again three furlongs from home, and was well clear of Peter’s Fault and Storm Queen as they turned into the straight. However, nothing had a chance with the leader, who went on to register a comfortable victory oy four lengths from Peter’s Fault, with Storm Queen a length further back. Golden Oaks, who improved his position in the run home, was fourth. BIG RACE TO PAUL DRUJSUS. SOUTHERNER’S GOOD EFFORT. Although the first to get away, Smoke Screen, the favourite for the Manawatu Trotting Cup, in which all started, lost his position early, and he was never really dangerous thereafter, the finish being fought out by the two southern trainers, J. Bryce and C. Donald, for the former to have a comfortable win with Paul Drusus.

Teri Kingi backed into the rails at the signal to go, and -was out of the race very early. Otherwise, the field went off evenly, Smoke Screen taking the lead, only to give way to Lady Author as they turned into the back, with Paul Drusus, Hard Words and Highland Derby handy. Passing through the straight on the final lap, Highland Derby was with Lady Author, but going along the back, Paul Drusus commenced a run which carried him to the front half a mile from home. Hard Words worked into third position crossing the top and then deposed Lady Author at the straight entrance. However, he could not reach Paul Drusus, who drew away to win by three lengths from Hard Words, with Bell o’ Mine, who weakened at the end of a fast finishing effort, three-quarters of a length back. Nelson’s Chum was fourth with the favourite next.
