BOROUGH RATE POSITION OVER 90 PER CENT PAID.

To-day the 10 per cent, penalty on all rates unpaid to the Feilding Borough Council became operative, but out of a total collectible rate of £14,500, over 90 per cent, has been paid. The actual figures of the receipts are not yet-available, but the town clerk, Mr N. C. Harding, stated this morning that the amount remaining unpaid is very small. Yesterday the borough office staff had a busy time coping with a last minute rush to avoid the penalty, and handled a large sum of money. SCHOOL APPOINTMENTS. New appointments made at the Feilding primary schools which re-as-semble on Monday include Miss M. Callaghan, who has been appointed to the staff of Manchester Street School vice Mr S. G. Still, now headmaster at Stanway School. The probationary assistants appointed to Manchester Street are Miss E. Whisker and Miss E. Pearce. The probationary assistants appointed to Lytton Street School are Miss R. Smith and Miss J. AVilson. JANUARY RAINFALL. During the first month of the present year Mr F. Mason, of Sandon Road, recorded 3.26in5. of rain against an average for the month of 2.Spins. Rain fell on 15 days, the highest fall being on January 29, when lin. was registered. The fall was considerably higher than that for January. 1933, a total of 2.olins. being recorded for the 31 day period on that occasion, the fall being distributed over 12 days. NOTES. ' While Mr F. Billman, of Feilding, was turning into South Street from Kimbolton Road on AA r ednesday evening on his bicycle, a collision occurred with a motor car which was proceeding in the direction from which the cyclist had come, and Air Billman was knocked from his machine. He receiv- ; ed severe lacerations and bruises to his thigh, his injuries requiring

stitches. He is now progressing satisfactorily, but will not be about for a few days. Another cyclist was injured in Kimbolton Road on Thursday evening, a car colliding with him and seriously damaging his machine. Before Air R. AI. AVatson, S.M., at the Alagistrate’s Court, a voung man was namanded until next Tuesday on a serious charge. Bail was allowed in th P sum of £2OO.

Miss M. McKinnon, who has been assisting as second nurse at the Feilding schools dental clinic, will complete her term in Feilding on Monday and will return to the clinic at AVaipawa. A large consignment of Southdown rams bought at the fair yesterday at Feilding were for shipment to the South Island, the greater part of the number bought by the agents being low-priced rams. Miss Turner and Miss Harries, of Auckland, representing the British Mission -in Syria, were visitors to Feilding this week. They gave addresses to a large attendance in the Baptist Church. Miss Turner, who is a teacher spends her vacations in the ' interests of the mission by giving addresses. Miss Harries, a daughter of Rev. Mr Harries, a Presbyterian minister, is the first missionary from the North Island for the Syrian field. She leaves next month. As Syria is under French mandate and Miss Harries is a gifted French scholar and linguist, she is admirably equipped for the work. PERSONAL. Mr Keith Haybittle, of Feilding, his friends will regret to learn, has been admitted to the Napier Hospital suffering from complications following an attnek of influenza. He will be wished a speedy return tq health.
