MR GANDHI AGAIN.
SEARCH FOR PEACE. Received October 31. 8.30 a.m. CALCUTTA, Oct. 30. Mr Gandhi’s latest effusion says that he is "dying for co-operation with the Government in restoring peace that is real, not the peace of the grave. Tlie Government’s plan seems to be like that of a physician who seeks to remove a deadly disease without probing and dealing with the causes.” ALLEGED WEAKNESS. GOVERNMENT CRITICISED. The Bengal Government on October 2 issued an official communique denying the statement made in an open letter to the Press by Midnapore Europeans that, after tlie murder of the magistrate, Mr Burge, the hands of the local officials were so tied that the terorrists regarded it as another victory. The communique said special measures, such as extra police and the curfew, were announced on September 16. The disquieting fact remains that a. fortnight was allowed to elapse before the measure was enforced. The situation at Midnapore, which is the black spot of terrorism, is known to everybody in the locality, and should be known to the Government. The impression still obtains that the Bengal Government never acts until it is forced to do so by. public opinion.
