“A COUNTRY GIRL.”

To-night marks the apex of the efforts of the local Amateur Operatic Society in their annual entertainment and cultural development. It is the opening night of the delightful musical play “A Country Girl” which will be presented for five nights at the Opera House. No expense has been spared by the society in an endeavour to present a really first-class show. Lavish expenditure lias been made in dressing and scenery and the moving waterwheel and playing fountain in the garden of the Ministry o,f Fine Arts,. together with novel lighting effects, is a striking background for a particularly fine ballet. The cast of characters contains the names of many amateur players who have had long experience in this, field of activity. Miss Naomi Whalley again plays the part of Nan, the village flirt, and Mr E. G Seeker, whose work in the Amateur Society for many years in leading roles is well known, takes the part of Commander Geoffrey Challoner. Mrs Brian Simpson is Eastern in her interpretation of tlio Princess of Bhong and her beautiful voice is heard to advantage in many vocal num bers, notably “Under the Deodar.” Miss Vonno Lucona, a newcomer to Palmerston North, will be seen in the part of Marjorie, “A Country Girl.” Tho versatile Miss Edna Boon will again be seen in a comprehensive part comprising displays of her dancing, singing and general stage work. Miss Margaret Guy is the dignified . Mrs St. Quinton Raikes, who has original ideas of electioneering which are rather upset by Granfer Mummery (Mr J. M. Pearson). Mr Harry Palmer as Barry has the comedy lead and M Bert Eising gives able assistance in the performance of the part of Sir Joseph Verity, anxious for the return of his “wooden headed” son (Mr E. G. Spraggon) to represent the district in Parliament. Mrs Cameron is to bo seen in tho part of the nurse and Mrs U. M. Chambers plays Lady Anchcster who, .with Lord Anchcster (Mr C. Rabonc) gives a brilliant ball in the second act at tho Ministry of Fine Arts. Mr J. W. Jones plays Lord Grassmere. A full orchestra under tho conductorship of tho society’s honorary conductor (Mr A. J. Graham) will be provided and as popular prices are being charged a bumper season is anticipated. Mrs J. Hulmo is the producer and her work in this conection including the provision of ballets is up to her. usual high standard. Popular prices are being charged and tho plans for the remainder of tho five nights season are rapidly filling at the central booking office.
