(From Our Own Correaoondent.) t SHANNON, Oct. 50. 1 The opening of the Bowliig and Croquet Club took place on Saturday aftern«pn. Although a keen wind jwas blowing a:?!, enjoyable time was spentlby all. The visitors included rinks froml Palmerston North, Takaro and Foxton Bolvling Clubs, and in tho croquet section, belides a.good gathering of members, there Vere several ladies from Shannon and Maligaaro present. Tho president of the Bclwling Club (Mr J. Alexander) declared lloth greens open and extended a welconSe to the visitors and new members. N. Stephenson (now a member V>£ the Palmerston North Club) again presilnt on an opening day'. R. Stansell that thesllub was inaugurated. Although there was then a membership of 16, not one of them lad ever handled a bowl until the opening lay of the club. Ho spoke in humorous vilin of their first trip .to Wellington which was taken for bowling tuition.. He understood that the membership to-day wlis about the same as it was 28 years ado and he sincerely hoped that it would novclr go below this number, but rather that th\; club would increase in prosperity. 1 On Friday evening the Girls’ Club held their 'final dance of the season, when plain! and fancy dress (masquerade) was the! order of the evening. The girls had done! all possible to ensure the enjoyment ofj their guests and the large attendance must’ have been most gratifying. The popular vote for the costumes proving the best disguiso resulted in Mr and Mrs J. Caldwell ("‘Grandfather and Grandmother”) winning the trophies. _ The display of fancy costumes was varied and humorous and added to the enjoyment of tho evening. Supper was provided by the club members and Mr J. T. Bovis ably carried out the duties of M.C. Dancing was kept up to a late hour and the club members are to be congratulated upon the excellent arrangements. Beneficial rain fell throughout the day on Sunday in Shannon. Mr J. Powell, of the Bank of New Zealand staff, Auckland, and Mrs Powell, are spending a few clays with Mr and Mrs T. Hensman. k Mrs B. G. Taylor, of Palmerston North, was a visitor to the Croquet Club opening day on Saturday. l Shannon defeated in the Horowhenua cricket championship played at Shannon on Saturday. k Mrs H.
