WORKERS’ COMPENSATION.
HIGHER RATE LIKELY. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Oct. 30. To allow the payment of slightly higher rates of compensation than the existing law authorises to relief workers permanently injured, either totally or partially, it is probable that legislation will be introduced by the Government this session to amend the .'Workers’ Compensation Act. Under the present law, compensation in the event of injury is based on the average weekly earnings of the workers over the period of 12 months immediately preceding the accident. Since unemployed men are on relief work for two or three days a week, and that for only part of the year. || their average earnings over 12 months j'lj are low and the rates of compensation f to which they are entitled are also <f low. It is understood that the change i contemplated by the Government will he in the direction of establishing a slightly higher minimum rate of compensation than the existing law grants.
