3 LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND ’ PRICES. * Allowing for the holiday at the opening 3 °f the period, tho volume of trading on the metropolitan stock exchanges last week showed a reduction on that of rccom weeks. In a number of sections the market was dull and prices in most case's moved irregularly. Business in Gcv i i ment loans was restricted, but the market wa.s a strong one. Sellers were more in ovidence during tho latter part of the , week. The 4 per cent., stocks, 1940, sold s firmly at £lO2, the 1946’s at £lOl 15s and , m one case £lOl 7s 6d, tho 1949’s at £IOO ' ■'■ss, and tho 1955’s at £lOl 10s. The 3i per I cent, stock, 1939-52, was done at £lO2 2s bd, and the 1938-52 at £lOl 12s 6d. Deal- ’ ln £ 3 in local body and other debentures wero very few. In the banks section, , New Zcalands made a good recovery fol--1 *£"7 11 S’ announcement of the interim dividend. Opening sales wore made at 46s 7£d and 45s 9d, and tho market improved to ; 46s 6d. There was a deal in the long-term mortgage shares at 32s 3d. National of [ New Zealand were steadier at 83s to 84s. . Commercial of Australias were firm at 16s lOd to 17s, and the preference sold at £8 16s to £8 15s. Australasias wero done £l2 15s. New South Wales at £3l 15s, E.S. and A. Bank at £5 13s 6d to £5 14s 6d, and Commercial of Sydney at £l7 j 15s to £l7 17s. Union of Australasias I were a little irregular, selling at £lO 5s to £lO 8s and casing to £lO 6s. Pastoral j, shares were very quiet, tho only business , being in Goldsbrough Morts at 29s 6d to f 29s 9d, and New Zealand Loan and Mcr- j cantile ordinary stock at £6O. Insurance . shares were dull. South British were , done at 73s 9d and 71s 9d, the latter ox j New Zcalands at 54s 6d, and A.P.A.’s at Us 7d. New Zealand Guarantee Corporations sold at 8s 4d, 8s 5d vxr ,i? s C*as shares were rather easier, Wellingtons selling at 34s and 33s 6d, Aueklands at 23s 5d and 23s 4d, and Christchurch at 275. In the miscellaneous section the market was fairly firm. Now Zealand Drugs were active sellers at 70s to 70s 3d. Electrolytic Zinc ordinaries sold at 25s 3d to 25s 6d and the preference at 35s and 34s lOd. FARMING NEWS. RURAL RAKINGS. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Coy., Ltd., have received the following advice from their London house, dated October 27: —Sheepskins: Position of market as compared with preceding auctions —prices are in sellers’ favour. Demand keen. Catalogues well cleared. At a sale of horses at Pukckohc, last week, actiyo young medium draughts brought from £32 to £4O; aged medium draughts. £l6 to £27; heavy draughts sold up to £27; young farm horses, £22 to £3O; aged farm horses, £l4 to £2l 10s Light harness horses brought from £l2 to £18; hacks and gig ponies, £4 10s to £lO 10s. A four-year-old draught colt was passed in at £45. Opinions were divided at a meeting of the North Canterbury executive of the Farmers’ Union when a copy of the Stock Improvement Bill being promoted by the I Royal Agricultural Society was received from the president of the society, Mr L. R. C. Macfarlanc. It was generally agreed that an improvement in the quality of stock was desirable, but it seemed that the provisions of the Bill would react very harshly on some farmers. Some. members thought that the provisions were too drastic, but others were o,f the opinion that something drastic was needed for the protection of the public.
