CRICKET SEASON OPENED.

MODERATE SCORING. In dull and threatening weather, accompanied by a high wind ant showers of rain in the early afternon, the Feilding cricket season was launched on Saturday at Kowha: Park. The wickets were in very fail condition and played a little beyond expectations. The outfield was rathei slow but the advantage of the motoi mower to the surface was apparent ir the shortness of the turf. ' Players found No. 2 wicket eiitirely reconstructed and with the pitch at right angles to its former position. Tlit change was the subject of much approval in that the late afternoon sun will be avoided and a larger field afforded, although one boundary is 0 little shorter. Players on No. 1 wicket also commended the change for the reason that those on No. 2 wicket are now in the same line of; sight and the attention of batsmen on No. 1 wicket facing the road is not diverted as hitherto.

Feilding met Public Service on No 2 wicket and batted first. Dunn mad l most of his opportunity to score ere ditably.. Sugden, a newcomer to Feild ing cricket, also shaped well, am Donaldson overcame all hesitancy t< score freely. He was -settling ■ dowi .nicely when he tapped a rising bal from Barltrop through the slips. Bur gess taking a smart catch. Siever: reached double figures with a brace o singles and two neat fours to th< fence, and Crooke, who made a re appearance at the Park after severa years’ absence from cricket, reachec 14 by patient batting. He finally lost his bails to Still when he walkec out to an enticing delivery from Bari trop. : The innings closed for 103 three Service bowlers, Burgess, Barltrop and McLeod, snaring the honours. Public Service showed themselves tc be badly out of practice and were unable to score very rapidly. ■ The bowling though not over difficult kepi the batsmen on the defence. McClure and Ferguson were shaping nicely when a miscall by the 'latter cost him his wicket, Lange playing out time in a failing light. Service had lost four wickets for 41 runs when play ceased. On No.l wicket Old Boys and Colyton met, both teams being short of full strength, the former playing nine men and Colyton 10. Interest centred in Rev. E. 0. Blamires, the ex-New Zealand and Wairarapa representative, as he opened with Howell for Colyton, and it was unfortunate that he went early to a run out decision that was obviously wrong, the umpire not observing that it was the wicketkeeper’s legs which knocked the wickets down and not the ball which the ’keeper was jumbling. M. Waldin compiled 17 in a brief display of big hitting, but the best effort of the day was that of Noel Bramwell, who reached 43 before J. Dewe scattered his stumps. Hocken played cautiously for his 15 and an interesting last wicket rally by Power and Bramwell saw the tally carried to 120 before the innings closed. Old Boys bowlers were hardly in form but they got very little assistance from the wicket. - , ; . After a bad start in their turn at ;the wickets, Brock only making a single, Old Boys appeared to be well on the way to an overhaul of their opponents’ score, Rosoman and J. Dewe scoring steadily. "With their dismissal, however, Waldin got away on a brief career of damage which altered the trend of events, V. Whitehead being the only other player to reach double figures. At 66 the last wicket fell, leaving Colyton ahead with a margin of 54 runs on the first innings. In a bad light Colyton went to the wickets a second time, Blamires on this occasion playing some nice strokes before Whitehead beat him. Play ceased with Colyton having one wicket down for 32 runs.
