HOW SHEEP THINK.
SENSE OF DEATH SAYS EXPERT. The secretary of - the Performing Animals Defence Deague, Mr E. MacMicliael, hotly denies the assertion of Craig, principal of the Dublin Veterinary College, that sheep cannot think. Professor Craig declared that it is not cruel to, let sheep see others slaughtered, as the sheep is incapable of reasoning that it will shortly suffer similarly. Mr MacMicliael recalls a visit to the “best-ordered slaughter-house in the world, where sheep were stunned. Every time the captive-bolt pistol was fired it made only a slight ‘*pop,” yet all the sheep made quick convulsive movements of fear, as instinct or intuition warned them of approaching, death. “Sheep are not stupid/’ he says ‘ because they abstain from eat"the flesh of their fellow-creatures, and when they are dying they go into a corner without fuss, like gentlemen.”
