EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” SEPTEMBER 26, 1903.
At a special meeting of the Palmerston North Borough Council it was decided that .the borough abattoirs should not be situated at Hokowhitu and that fresh tenders for land should be called, the southern end of the town (Longburn) to receive preference. The council had previously decided to purchase land at Hokowhitu but members of the community, waited on tlie council with a petition signed by fully 250 ratepayers asking that tlie abattoirs should not be established in that area.
Tension was still apparent in the Ottoman Empire and 30,000 Bulgarian reservists had been summoned. The Turks were 1 watchful and France had decided to send 40,000 troops to Crete as a precautionary measure. Captain Walls, a Sydney man, had decided to build a yacht to challenge for the America Cup. He intended to equip the craft with a twin circular keel, his own invention. The annual horse parade under the auspices of the Manawatu A. and P. Association had been held at the Showgrounds and had been the best to date. The Clydesdale and Sliire horses were stated to be as good a lot as coidd be gathered together anywhere in the colony.
