SPORTING

WORKERS AT AWAPUNI.. EXCELLENT TRACK CONDITIONS. (By “Binocular.”) Although there was a light frost this • morning it rapidly disappeared under the rays of the bright sun. The tracks at Awapuni, which had benefited by the recent rains, were in great order and the fast work was carried out on the course proper, the flags, however, being wide out. L. Wilson was the first mentor to appear, but he restricted his' team to easy opera tions on the inner grass. Princess Doreen has benefited by the injections of , a scrum and she is now looking quite her old self again. She has not as yet been galloped, but she may be given an outing at Otaki in preparation for a northern trip. Catalogue, while he failed to figure prominently at Marton, has been doing good track work and he will probably be sharpened up from now on in preparation for Avondale. This big three-year-old has been given an easy time to date and the patient policy should bring its reward. His fellow three-year-old, Ralphyllis,. was to have raced at Foxton, but ho is hardly forward enough as yet. Manawatu (Scobie) is steadily improving and in a gallop over seven furlongs in company with Mercian Prince (Atwell) and Riotous (L. Gray) he finished on terms with Mercian Prince after running the distance in 1.38, the first half mile being covered in 55 4-ssccs. Riotous weakened slightly in the run home, but he has not been in work very long. Arctic Region (Scobie) opened up a gap from Senegal (Gray) and Celeste (Thomson) in the early stages of a five furlongs flutter, the first two furlongs being left behind in 27sccs. Senegal moved up in the run down the straight to have the advantage at the post, with Celeste three lengths back. The full distance was run in 1.7. Celeste, who is a Sky Blue gelding, showed improvement. Thrasher (Voitre) and Sir Romeo (Faulkner), the latter having the inside, running, ran a mile in 1.55. the pair keeping together throughout. They ran the first three furlongs in 45sccs and the first five furlongs in 1.12. Hint (Chisholm) displayed plenty of early speed when he dashed away from To Kopuru (Bradley) and Calydon (Bell). The leader commenced to stop over the final stages, but he held on in improved style to have a head advantage from 'lo Kopuru at tho finish, with Calydon, who had much tho worst of the weights, a short length back. Tho six furlongs were negotiated in 1.24 2-ssecs. Equitant (Voitre), unaccompanied, ran five furlongs very smoothly in 1.8 after leaving the first two furlongs behind in 26 4-ssnc. This maro promises to show an eavlv return to her old form. En Vidctte (Thomas), a racy looking Hunting Song gelding, was worked on the plough, coming home tho last three furlongs of his task in 44sec. Bold Jim (McDowell) was holding a clear cut advantage over Mister Gamp (Thomson) after running five furlongs, m 1.11 4-5, but the veteran was very anxious to go on with it at the close. Bold Jim is a big type of maiden who will require time. , . King Thomond (Voitre) strode away from the mile peg to quicken up over the last three furlongs and break 41scc —better than he appeared to bo travelling. J his gelding has built up considerably since joining R. E. Hatch’s team. LO3 Quex, the elder full-sister to tho Wanganui winner, passion Fruit, is now in training at Awapuni under the care of her owner, Mr O. Nicholson. She is of a nice type, but she has no racing form to commend her. Last season she had only two outings, while as a two-year-old the daughter of Los Vegas made five appearances in public without filling a place. The only jumping attempted was executed by Hnuwai (Flower) and tho novice performer, High Society (Thomson). The latter bowled along very freely between his fences, but was inclined to run out approaching the battens and he would lose ground' 11; ereby. Hauwai went up to the Lord Quex gelding two and a half furlongs from home, but High Society was holding his companion nicely when he took the final fence indifferently to be beaten in the run to the post. After his successful effort at Wanganui, Pango was restricted to an easy task in the inner grass. Another Wanganui performer, tho two-year-old Flaxen, was not at the tracks, . having been treated to a short let-up in tho paddock. The filly’s partner, Bodyline, however, is again among the workers. Blacksmith, who recently rejoined Mrs McDonald’s team, is among the lady mentor’s active brigade. He looks burly and well, but it will be some time before ho is back in racing trim. Another improved horse is the Top Gallant —Skyline mare Top Flier, who has grown into a very roomy mare. She has not done a great deal of fast work, but her breeding points to her making good.
