RELIEF DEPOT.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Like “Grateful,” 1 also have refrained from taking part in the corj respondenoe re the unemployed. I feel | that his own letter needs correcting, jHe queries bow the 500 signatures I were obtained. Like the chairman of 1 the Central Relief Committee, he grasps at tho only likely straw, namely, that the relief workers did not have sufficient backbone to refuse to sign. On the contrary a lot were afraid to sign for fear of being victimised, and those who did sign are to he applauded for protesting against what they consider to he wrong in principle. As for the “Communistic notions” referred to, I have never seen signs of any, and I have attended the U.W.M. meetings for some time past. If we had the same conditions here as exist in Russia there would be no need for a relief depot and all workers would be contented as they would be able to earn an honest living, and not be compelled to work for charity. The U.W.M. has issued an open invitation to the Central Relief Committee to state their reasons for taking up such a Hitlerite attitude towards the deputation which waited on them a few weeks ago. Ndw, sir, who gave these individuals the power to sit on their throne and say what is demoralising to the workers and who inquire into their private affairs? If they have any sincerity in them at all they will at least give an answer and also let everyone know their reasons for the attitude they adopt. I could write a lot more, but fear to trespass unduly on your valuable space, but hope some abler pen than mine will carry this question on. —Yours, etc., J.H.
