(From Our Own Correspondent.) NEWBURY, Sept. 22.

Arbor Day was celebrated at the school on Tuesday when many parents wore present. In the morning, lessons suitable to the occasion were given. In the afternoon, the school was visited by Mr E. H. Lange, agriculture instructor to the Education Board. In front of the school special native trees were planted. Mr H. Morris, a very old resident, who had planted the first 'tree in 1887 in the school grounds, was called upon to plant a golden wattle, which he requested be called “Old Harry.” Other trees planted officially were those by Mr E. W. Collins (chairman for 21 years) and Mrs Collins, Mr Cheetham, Mr Hansen (chairman). Each child in the school was then responsible for planting a tree. Afternoon tea was served to the visitors, Mrs Hansen, helped by ladies of the committee, acting as hostess. A concert and dance in aid of the school tennis court funds wan held in the hall on Wednesday evening. The concert was organised by Mr Garde Grimshaw, assisted by his pupils and local artists. A most enjoyable programme was provided, encores being insisted upon. The following programme was submitted: Mr Whitelcck, song, “McGregor’s Gathering”; Mrs Yioung, song, “Little Damozel”; Miss Wiggins, recitation, “The New Hat”; Miss Pollard, song, “Love, the Jester”; Miss Doherty, song, “Waiata Maori”; Miss Wright, monologue, “Three Trees”; MiGarde Grimshaw, rocitation, “Old Ace”; Mrs Plummer, song, “Here’s to Love and Laughter”; Mr Whitelock, song, “Sombre Wood.” After supper, dancing took place, the music being provided by Messrs S. and R. Wood and P. Collins. Extras were played by Mrs Little and Miss Godden. Messrs Callaway and S. Cheetham were M.C.’s. Mr Callaway apologised for the absence of the president of the club, Mr F. Paul, and thanked Mr Grimshaw and his assistants for the splendid programme. The school w-as visited by the senior inspector, Mr F. McMurtrie. The children arc busy collecting eggs for the Willard Home.
