COUNTRY’S CREDIT.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —The other day Air Alansford mentioned he would favour the credit of the country being placed in' the hands of a National Credit Board. An immediate development of this could be the issue of a national dividend to every individual in the country, and a national dividend in simple terms means that everybody would get sufficient of the nation’s wealth to enable them to obtain enough food and clothing, and keep a roof over their heads and obtain comfort, if not luxury; this would go a long way to breaking the power of the giant, poverty, which m is said is the cause of over 90 per cent, of the world’s crime. It must be emphasised that this would not mean “taking away from those who have and give to those who have not.” There would be no necessity for this, as there is more than sufficient for all. Aly suggestion is that a true national dividend would do away with the necessity of old age and other pensions, unemployment relief of all kinds, and most forms of charity, and would provide economic security. The question of whether work is done for it or not is immaterial, every person is entitled to his or her share, and everyone knows there are plenty of people who get thousands per annum for nothing, and although conditions in New Zealand may be good compared with other parts of the world they, are poor to what they could be if everybody had economic freedom, and a national dividend would go a long way to obtaining this.—l am, etc., G. F. BECK. 10 Fitzroy Street, September 22, 1933.
