SCHOOL AT TAWATA.
A LETTER OE THANKS. “May I take this opportunity of thanking you on behalf of all my people ior giving us a school at Tawata (Wanganui River), wrote Mr Karanga te Kere to the Wanganui Education Board in a letter read to tills week’s meeting. “I know how important education is becoming, and I am very pleased indeed to have been able to give the site of the school as my share in obtaining it,” he added. “It gives me pleasure also to think that the pakeha and my people are being educated together in one building. My grandchildren seem to be doing very well at school and I hope they may be able to complete their learnings in such pleasant surroundings. The teacher you have sent us seems to understand our ways and makes the children happy in their work. The committee tells me that you are giving every assistance to our school by sending up wire, seeds and trees. They themselves are working on the grounds and we hope soon to have pretty surroundings on our old tribal grounds and homes of our fathers and ancestors.” Mr E. F. Hemingway (the chairman) : That is a very fine letter, of a type that we do not see very often.
