(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Sept. 21. Mrs S. Barber presided over a large attendance of members of the Shannon Women’s Institute at the September meeting held on Wednesday afternoon. It was decided to enter for the Crawford potato shield and Mrs Waring-Xaylor undertook the charge of the competition. Members desiring to plant three potatoes and attempt to break the record tor a heavy. crop should get their seed from Mrs WaringTaylor. An interesting and conmprehcnsive report of the recent Dominion Conference in Christchurch was given by Mrs Barber, and much appreciated by all. It was reported that the recent competition organised for Institute funds had resulted in a profit of £4 15s 9d. Delegates to the next half-yearly federation meeting to ho held at Mangatainoka in October will be Mcsdames S. Barber and D. Owen. Afternoon tea was served by Mosdames Tremowan, Radford, Todd, Mabey and W. Sathorlcy, and a competition for the best vase of Howers resulted in a tie for first place between Mosdames Dickoff and Tromcwan, and for second place between Mcsdames Tremowan (second entry) and F. Thompson. A feature of the afternoon was the first appearance of the Mangaorc group of the ■ recently formed Drama Circle, in a short sketch. The six players, most of whom wore entirely new to the art, held the interest of all, and gave full effect to the many humorous situations in the sketch. Loud applauso of enjoyment and congratullation folowcd the drawing of the curtains. Next month members will have a gardening talk by Mrs S. Roberts, and pen painting demonstration by Mrs R. R. Lind, while the competition will be for a piece of apple tart. Final details for tho visit to Foxton (when Shannon will supply their pregramrne) were made, and the singing of the National Anthem closed another successful .meeting. Mrs C. Stern was welcomed as a new member. At a mooting of tho Unemployment Com mittcc, held on Wednesday evening, it was reported that local registrations totalled 73. During the same period in 1931 the registrations w'ere 146 and in 1932 only 56. Four applications under the 4A scheme wore considered. One v>as approved and three refused. Ladies of the Veil, Bede’s Church held a dance in the Parish Hall on Tuesday evening. The inclement weather no doubt affected tho attendance, hut those who had braved the elements, spent a most enjoyable evening. Mr P. Cole was M.C. Mcsdames McLaggan and Snelling were the winners of the first and second trophies at the Tuesday afternoon euchre party. Mesdamos Roach and Terry were hostesses. The Mayor (Mr E. Butt) has quite recovered from his recent indisposition.
