HOUSEWIVES’ LEAGUE.

Formed in Alarch last with a view to assisting the members of the community, who should be unfortunately placed, the Housewives’ League—an offshoot of the Labour Party—to-day held a jumble sale in tlie Square when an extensive array of clothing of all descriptions was offered for sale at most reasonable figures. Throughtout tlie winter the members have been engaged in renovating and remaking, where necessary, the clothing received at the Central Relief Depot. In addition they have held their own sewing bees, remodelling garments’and making articles from material'ivliich they have purchased and these latter are offered for sale at efforts such as is being held today. By so doing the organisation is playing a worthy part in the life of the community, during a period of stress and difficulty to many, of the residents of the city, while as a means of building up a fund to assist it in its work, card tournaments are held regularly each week. A strong band of helpers offered their services at tlie jumble sale and acted as saleswomen for, in addition to the new and used garments, there were on offer cooked goods, jams, preserves and needlework of various descriptions. Those so engaged under the direction of Mrs F. Robertson, as president, and Airs AI. Baiihani, as secretary, were Alesdames- E. . Treweek AV. O’Donnell, D. AValls, A. Yule, A. Thompson, AV. Olliver, B. Kinsett and Miss Stevens.
