AMERICAN TOURNAMENTS. Received September 21, 12.30 p.m. LOS ANGELES, Sept. 2U. In the exhibition tennis tournament Billy Seward, junr. (Beverley Hills) beat McGrath (Australia) 6—3, 7 —5. Perry (England) and Nunoi (Japan) beat Crawford ai*d Turnbull (Australia), 4 —6, 6 —3, —4. In the Pacific south-west tournament Perry (England) beat Van Ryn (United States), 6 —l, 6—3. Stoeffen (United States) beat Nunoi (Japan), 6 —4, 6—4. Seward defeated McGrath by straight sets in a battle of backhand strokes. McGrath won his service in the first game, taking the winning point with a backhand ace. Sewa-rd took his first service to love, starting a winning streak that lasted during the next four games, during which McGrath won only six points. In the seventh game McGrath won his service after a. deuce struggle and then broke Seward’s service. There were many brilliant rallies in the next game, but after McGrath had taken the score to deuce he netted twice to lose the game and the set, 6 —3. The second set went to twelve games. It was hard fought throughout, but in the twelfth game Seward broke McGrath’s service to i win the match, 7 —5.
