HOCKEY
CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS. KEEN PLAY BY LADIES. Five districts were represented in the annual champion of champions tournament held by the Manawatu Ladies’ Hockey Association at the Park Road grounds yesterday. The districts were Manawatu, Dannevirke, Akitio, Feilding, and Wairarapa. The Gladstone (Wairarapa) team emerged the winners of the competition, Carnarvon, the previous winners, being equal in points with Dannevirke Old Girls for second place. The games, under the management of Mr G. M. Ranson, were of 15 minute spells with a three minutes interval. At the conclusion of the matches the vase for which, the tournament is held was presented to the winning team by Mr Ranson, the president of the Manawatu Ladies’ Hockey Association. The results of the games were:— First round. —Carnarvon 0 v. Dannevirke Old Girls 0; Bunnythorpe 0 v. Gladstone 0; Waione (Akitio) a bye. Second round.—Carnarvon 2 v. Waione 0; Old Girls 2 v. Bunnythorpe 0; Gladstone a bye. Third round.—Carnarvon 2 v. Bunnythorpe 0; Gladstone 2 v. Waione 0; Old Girls a bye. Fourth round.—Old Girls 5 v. Waione 1; Gladstone 2 v. Carnarvon 0; Bunnythorpe a bye. Fifth round. —Bunnythorpe 2 v. Waione 1; Gladstone 1 v. Old Girls 0; Carnarvon a bye. The points allotted were Gladstone 7, Old Girls 5, Carnarvon 5, Bunnythorpe 3, Waione 0. The referees who controlled the games were Messrs Levy, Sporle, Byers, Dixon, Paton, Wilton, Martin and Pullyn. MEN’S COMPETITION. THE FINAL GAMES. The final games in the men’s weekly competitions were held on the Park Road grounds yesterday. In many cases the teams were playing short, but some good play was seen. P.D.C. drew with Palmerston North A. Both teams scored two goals, those for the former being scored by McGonigal and Duckworth, while Cutler netted twice for Palmerston North. Messrs Chapman and Wilson were the referees. C. 0.8. defeated Pheonix by six goals to one, R. Hoare and Nesbit each scoring three goals for the winners. Lundy scored for the losers. The referees were Messrs Blaekbourn and McLachlan. Combined. Services won their match with Broadway A by four goals to nil. The scorers were Monteith (3) and Tilson. The referees were Messrs Aitehison and Levy. Massey College A defeated Palmerston North B by two goals to one. Levy was the scorer for Palmerston North, while the goals for the winners were netted by Suckling and Merry. Mr Wilson controlled the game. Massey College B defeated Broadway B by two goals to nil. The game was refereed by Mr Byers. MAORI TEAM’S MATCHES. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 20. Following continuous rain the Winter Show ground resembled a miniature lake for the Maori women’s representative hockey matches between th Wellington A and B teams and Oliau and Manakau respectively today.. Under such conditions hockey of an attractive nature was out of the question. Wellington A (H. Wi Neera) drew with Oliau (E. Poijtama) 1 all. Manakau beat Wellington B, I—nil. D. Robinson was the scorer.
