CRICKET
Y.M.C.A. CLUB. The Y.M.C.A. Cricket Club’s annual report reads : The competitions were commenced on October 15 and only on two occasions did the weather conditions render the ground unfit for play, which resulted in an unusually long playing season. However, on all of the twenty-four playing days, the juniors fielded a full team, hut we regret that owing to not being able to keep in touch with the third grade boys, the latter team was short on several occasions. Practices were held regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Sportsground and were fairly well attended. Eight, teams took part in the junior division and we congratulate City Council on their winning performance. The points of the three leading teams -were: City Council 345, Y.M.C.A. 31, and Kia Toa 27. G. Griggs headed the batting with an average of 29.9. The hat presented hv Messrs G. H. Bennett, Ltd., for the best batting average was therefore won by this player. R. Biley was next with an average of 25.9. The leading howling averages were: W. Dickinson, 58 wickets, 6.1; G. Downes, 34'wickets, 6.6; C.' McMinn, 32 wickets, 10.9. Three junior representative fixtures were played against Feilding, Foxton and the Wednesday representatives. The following represented the association on one or more occasions: C. McMinn, W; Dickinson, G. Downes, F. Peterson, J. and G. Griggs. Five teams took part in the third grade competition and there, again, only three points separated our team from the Phoenix Club, who were the winners. This was a very fine performance for the newly formed team. G. Marshall headed the batting returns with an average of 19.7 and Mr T. R. Hodder’s hat, presented for the best average, was won by this player. This member also had the distinction of scoring a century, a very good effort in third grade cricket, and the only one scored in this grade. F. Collis was next with an average of 16.2. In conclusion, we desire to thank especially Mr W. B. Cameron, whose time and counsel have been at. the service of the club since its inception in 1929, also Messrs G. H. Bennett, Ltd., and Mr T. R. Hodder for presentation hats and those supporters, of the club who again assisted us with donations.
