EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING HELD. The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held yesterday afternoon, Mr E. F. Hemingway presiding Others present were Colonel J. H. Whyte, Messrs A. S. Coleman, J. S. Tingey. P. Muriro, J. Aitken and J. K. Hornblow. A resolution of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Mr J. S. L. Deem, city engineer, of Wanganui. The chairman reported that during the month he had visited the Foxton, Bainesse, Rangiotu, Russell Street and Ngutuwera schools. At Foxton he inspected the work of levelling the large hill in the playground. This was being carried out under the No. 5 unemployment scheme for the purpose of giving the children an additional playing area, which was badly needed when the school roll number, 388, was taken into consideration. Good work was being carried out at Bainesse and Rangiotu by the board’s workmen in painting and renovating the schools. At Russell Street good work was being done by the committee who were also improving their playing area with the aid of the No. 5 scheme. Mr E. R. Hodge, architect to the board, reported that the recently installed electric light at Parawanui School was adequate for ordinary purposes, and that any other light put in should be paid for by the committee. Opposing the building of teachers’ residences at small country schools, Mr Hemingway remarked that in these days it was necessary to save every shilling. As teachers were frequently changed it would be absurd to build a house for one teacher and then find that a single woman teacher, if appointed, could not use the house. Approval was given for the installation of two drinking fountains as requested by the committee of the Manchester Street School, Feilding. The architect reported that the erection of a fuel and bicycle shed at the Halcombe School was not. warranted. He was instructed to report on a request from Mr R. C. Martin, the teacher at Pohonui School, that a Miniature Rifle Club be established on a portion of the school grounds. A letter was received from Karanga Te Kere, of Tewhata, thanking the board for establishing a school in his district, and sending seeds and plants to the school.
