KIWITEA COUNTY

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The .Kiwitea County Council met at Ivimbolton, yesterday, Cr. W. P. Shaw presiding in the absence of the chairman, Cr. L. T. McLean. Also present were Crs. F. H. Tappin, W. Hair, N. V. Shannon, T. D. Wood, F. O. Stack, J. A. T. Brown and J. H. Williamson. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Valuation Department, advising payment of balance of subsidy on general rates for the year ended March 31, 1933, amounting to £461 14s lOd.—Received. From the Treasury Department, advising amount of goldfields revenue for the month of July, 1933, viz., ss. —Received. From the Public Works Department, advising payment of subsidy on account of the reconstruction of Jamieson’s Bridge, amounting to £273 6s Bd.* —Received. From the Main Highways Board, forwarding authorities for expenditure on maintenance of main highways in the county, for the period July 1, 1933, to March 31, 1934.—Received. From the Public Works Department forwarding copy of proclamation proclaiming land as a road in Block XI, Ongo S.D., Jamieson’s Bridge approach.—Received. BANK BALANCES. The bank balances of the county at the close of business on Tuesday were shown as follow : —County fund account (dr.), £1426 Is; employees’ accommodation special loan account (cr.), £26 9s lid; Jamieson’s bridge account (cr.), £457 10s lOd; Kimbolton cemetery account (cr.), £26 15s Id; land fund account No. 2 (cr.), £l3B 2s 7d; Waituna cemetery account (cr.), £ls'Os lid. —Adopted. Mr W. Hesseltine, the county treasurer, submitted the following statement on the county rates:- —General, 1933-34: Struck, £4795 2s lid; paid, £B7 6s sd; outstanding to date, £4707 16s 6d. Special rates, 1933-34: Struck, £2582 17s; paid, £3B 12s; outstanding to date, £2644 ss. Separate rate (Hospital, 1933-34): Struck, £2028 4s; paid, £39 13s 6d; outstanding to date, £I9BB 10s 6d. Arrears (three years): General, outstanding at April 1, 1933, £2559 14s 8d; paid, £Bfio 19s 7d; outstanding to date, £1692 15s Id. Specials: Outstanding at April 1, 1933, £745 10s 7d; paid, £223 10s 6d; outstanding to date, £522 0s Id. Summary of arrears outstanding: General, £1692 15s Id; specials, £522 0s Id; total, £2214 15s 2d. —Adopted. OVERSEER’S REPORT. Mr F. H. Eggcrs, county overseer, reported as follows on the work done in the ridings:—“Cheltenham Riding : The sections of Nos. 52 and 377 main highways have been kept in order by the power grader plant. The Cheltenham Cross Road, Bcaconsficld Valley and Hayne’s Line have also boon graded. The roadman has attended to usual maintenance work throughout the riding. Kiwitea Riding: Pothole repairs have been carried out on the section of the No. 52 highway in the riding. This road has received frequent attention from the power grader. Bryce’s, Mcßeth’s, Perry’s and the Upper Bcaconsficld Valley Roads have also been trimmed by the grader. The roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work, including cutting back of fern on Mcßcth’s Line. The work of carting out metal to the parking area at Kiwitea Hall and laying 60 foot of 6in tile drain pipes is completed, the total cost amounting to £ls 10s, including £3 on No. 5 scheme labour. Improvements have been carried out to a sharp bend on Coulter’s Line and some maintenance metal carted out on Coulter’s and Perry’s Lines by the county truck. Waituna Riding: The roadman has attended to pothole repair work on the section of the No. 377 main highway and the Rangitikci Valley Road south. Water tables throughout the riding have received attention and small slips removed. The roadman has also assisted with bridge repair work and preparing metal for carting out. Ongo Riding: The section of No. 377 main highway has been kept in good order by the power grader. Williamson’s Road West, Wilson’s Lino, and a section of the Cheltenham Cross Road have also been trimmed by the grader. The roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work; also stripping metal in the Waituna pit. The work of constructing a stone crate at the groyne, Parorangi Ford, has been completed, the total cost, including chain netting, not exceeding £l6. Kimbolton Riding;: The sections of Nos. 52 and 53 main highways have been kept in order by . the power grader and minor pothole repairs effected. The roadman has attended .to the usual maintenance work; also stripping pit on Forest Road for car tine out maintenance metal: —Peep-o’-Day Riding: On the eastern section of the riding, the roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work on the No. 52 main highway, Pecp-o’-Day and Bluff Roads. A considerable quantity of maintenance metal has also been stripped for use, in the near future, on No. 52 main highway and in the Pcep-o’-Day and Rangiwahia Ridings. On the western section of the riding, the roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work throughout his length and the carting out of a small quantity of metal for repairing road surfaces. Additional improvements have been carried out in the nature of widening and metalling a sharp bend on the Pakihikura Road. A fairly large timber culvert on this road collapsed and has since been renewed with 15in . concrete pipes 36ft long. Pakihikura Riding: The roadman has been engaged most of his time attending to the cleaning out of watertables. road surface repairs and assisting with grader work and bridge repairs. The Ohingaiti-Pembcrton Road and a section of Mangamako Road have been trimmed by the small grader plant. The short section of the No. 377 main highway in the riding has beep kept in fair order by the Waituna Riding roadman. Slips have been removed on the Mangarcre Road and watertables cleaned out. The work of repairing and renewing decking on the Otara bridge is well advanced and should bo completed at an early date. Rangiwahia Riding: The roadmen have attended to the usual maintenance work, cleaning out watertables and opening up culverts. Whare Road and a section of the No. 52 main highway have been trimmod by the small grader plant. The roadman on the eastern section of the riding has attended to the usual maintenance work; also assisting with the carting out of 57 cubic yards of maintenance metal on the Mangahuia and Bowling Roads. Repairs have been effected to watertables and slips removed on the Te I’ara Para Road. This section of read is in a weak condition for the want of metal.”— Adopted.
