VISIT TO AUSTRALIA. MISS KAY’S SPLENDID SHOWING. “The outstanding feature of our trip was the wonderful golf played by Miss Kay.,” said Mrs Guy Williams, captain of the New Zealand ladies’ golf team, which returned to Auckland by the Aorangi. “We were all exceedingly proud of her performances.” In addition to her brilliant play in the Tasman Cup match, Miss Kay had also won the Australian ladies’ championship at the Royal Melbourne course. She had returned a record score of 75, the scratch score for the course being 76. In recognition of this feat the Australian Ladies’ Golf Union had presented Miss Kay with a laurel wreath brooch in gold.. Miss Kay and J. Ferrier also returned a record score of 74 in the first round of the mixed foursomes. Playing into a strong wind, however, the strain proved too much, and although
conditions in the afternoon had improved, their play deteriorated. Miss Gaisford had also played well, Mrs Williams continued, but she had been unable to touch the greens quite as consistently as Miss Kay. The members of the team had played at the Royal Sydney course on tire way back from Melbourne, and there Mrs Templer, whose health had not been good, returned a score of 76, one over the scratch score for the course. “The general standard of ladies’ golf in Australia is very, high,” said Mrs Williams, “and there are some remarkably fine players. We saw the first two days of the men’s open championship in Melbourne, and there was some amazingly fine play which only made us wish that wo could have stayed longer. The courses were nothing short of a revelation. The special grass used on the sandy soil is excellent, and the well-planned bunkering of all greens demands absolute accuracy in every shot.”
