REPRESENTATIVES BEAT THE

REST.

A bitterly cold afternoon was not conducive to a very pleasant period at North Street Park on Saturday when the representative side beat a team characterised The Rest to the tune of live goals to nil. Both sides played only nine men and the match was more in the nature of a practice than anything eise. The teams were as follow: Representative. Harriman, Askam, Coombs, .Travers, Childs, Young, Crowe, McSheffrey, Bycroft. The Rest.—Graham, Omon, Kempson, Rabbitts, T. Crowe, Smillie, Carncll, Elliott, Hearsey. Half an hour after time the depleted sides set the ball roliin" at a lively pace to meet the wind at all angles. The representative side appeared to be getting the best tactics into operation for a short while, and within a few minutes Young had netted. The Rest had the assistance of the elements at this stage and pressed the representative backs consistently, but it was easy work for Young to increase the score. The advantage continued to lie with the representative players and some nice head work was seen despite the conditions, but as time wore on there was more evenness of play with better field work to liven up an otherwise dull match. A third score came to light from Young, however. The Rest were near to success on several occasions and were unfortunate that the wind deflected the leather, this being particularly so on one of the expeditions which Smilllio headed into the representatives’ area. Shortly before half-time Young again added to his total. A smart few minutes characterised the opening of the second spell, but play became more oven as it progressed and the representatives regained their advantage after a short time and once Smillie had' tested Harriman severely they presented more aggressive tactics. Coombs and McShcffrey were putting in a great deal of hard play at this part of (he match, but inability generally to keep the leather under control spoiled otherwise good football. Graham was making a good display in goal and had a narrow escape when Young sent in a stinger. The fifth goal came, however, when Coombs came back at the run and it was impossible to save. The midfield area saw more of the leather now than it had done for some minutes and there was a certain degree of liveliness, but it was of necessity a reckless display and one found it rather patchy. Time sounded with no further score. Mr F. W. Ivey was the referee.
