MOTOR SPEEDING.

ITALIAN GRAND PRIX. A TRAGIC DISPLAY. Received September 11, 1.10 p.m. MILAN, Sept. 10. The Grand Prix of Italy, over 500 kilometres, was held at Monza and resulted in a win for Fagioli in an Alfa Romeo at an aveage speed of 174.74 kilometres per hour. The fastest lap was 186.33. Nuvolari and Zehender were second and third respectively. Campari, in an Alfa Romeo, collided with. three others driven by Borzacchini, Barbieri and Castlebargo. Campari and Borzaccliini are dead. After this accident, which occurred in the second heat of the 62 kilometre race, Count Czaikowski, the holder of the world’s hour record and winner of the first heat, was leading ten competitors in the final when his car overturned near the fatal spot and left the track. It burst into flames, incinerating its occupant in tire presence of thousands of horror-stricken spectators, including his wife, whom friends led away dazed. The collision was apparently due to a slippery track as the result of heavy rain, or spilt oil. A competitor, Ballestrero, who avoided death l>y supreme skill • and remained in the race, said afterwards: “I was .s*x yards behind the victims when, amid a bursting cloud of smoke, Barzaccliini’s and Campari’s cars, which apparently touched at 130 miles an hour, somersaulted over the 13 foot embankment beside the track. They jammed on their brakes and skidded off the track on the opposite side. Barbieri’s car somersaulted thrice into the field.” The racing, nevertheless, proceeded, but the distance was reduced from 22 laps to 14. Lord Howe, smilingly rejecting a suggestion that he would retire, declared that the accident was no reason to give up. The result was Lehoux, in a Bugatti, 1; Mills (Alfa Romeo) 2; Bonetto (Alfa Romeo) 3. Lord Howe was unplaced.
