GOLFING TITLE
YOUNG PROFESSIONAL’S WIN. MELBOURNE, Sept. 10. The open golf championship was won by M. L. Kelly, the 20-year-old professional from Goulburn (New South Wales), with a total of 302 for four rounds. Kelly did 73 in the morning, and 80 in the afternoon.
Kelly had a gallery of 3000 —the largest that has ever followed a golf match in Victoria. His display was brilliant, and he well deserved his victory over his experienced opponents. The results were: —M. L. Kelly (New South Wales), 302: R. Jupp (Victoria) and A. W. Jackson (Victoria), 30.5; T. Howard (New South Wales), 306; G. Naismith (Victoria), 307; A. East (New South Wales), 309; H. Hattersley (New South Wales), F. Eyre (New South Wales) and W. L. Hope (Victoria.), 311; V. Richardson (New South Wales) and W. Bolger (New South Wales, 312; W. Clifford (Victoria), 313. Sloan Morpeth finished with 320. Kelly after his victory was all praise for Jack Irving, of Canberra, the professional, who taught him the game.
