NEW ZEALAND PLAYERS. DUTCHMEN BEATEN. LONDON, Sept. 9. E. D. Andrews and Stedman were included in the British International Club’s team playing against Holland at Eastbourne. Britain leads by eight matches to love, the wins including Andrews’s defeat of Timmer, 7—5, 6—B, 6—3; and Stedman’s defeat of Leembruggen, 6—4, 7—5. The New Zealanders in partnership won the doubles.

At the Eastbourne tennis tourney Britain won by 14 matches to 2. Andrews beat Leembruggen 5 —7, 6 —l, 6 —l; Timmer beat Stewman, I—6, 6 —3, 6 —4; Andrews and Stedman beat Timmer and Scheuller 6 —o, 6 —3.

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS.

JOAN RIDLEY’S SUCCESS

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 9. Joan Ridley (England) to-day won the middle States women’s tennis championship, defeating Alice Francis (New Jersey), 6—2, 6—2. Joan Ridley and Alice Fl-ancis won the middle States women’s doubles championship, defeating Anne Page, of Merion, and Cecilia Riegel, of Philadelphia, 9—7, 6—l. Miss Ridley reached the title round of the singles event with a 6—o, 6—3 victory over Anne Page.

PROFESSIONAL STATUS

COCHET AND VINES

NEW YORK, Sept. 9. A message from Paris states that Henri Cocliet has definitely decided to turn professional. Ellsworth Vines, despite his failure to reach the quarter-finals in defence of the national tennis championship, and his reluctance thus far to commit himself to a professional contract, is expected to follow Cochet’s lead and to turn professional before the end of the year. It is authoritatively understood that, despite denials, Vines has agreed to talk definite terms soon with the object of joining Tilden in a tour.
