THRILLING CONTEST
HARMSWORTH TROPHY • RETAINED. BRITISH CHALLENGER’S SKILL. AMERICAN’S HALF-MILE MARGIN (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received September 5, 11.10 a.m. VANCOUVER, Sept. 4. Mr Gar "Wood retains the Harmsworth trophy for speed boats, beating Mr Scott Paine by half a mile today. The race was one of the most thrilling of the Harmsworth contests, Mr Paine displaying driving skill rarely seen. No fewer than half-a-dozen times in the pell mell chase after Miss America X., the Briton’s small metal boat, Miss Britain IH., bounced almost clear of the water, but, with almost uncanny control, Mr Paine righted her and roared after the defender. In finishing the race Mr Paine, though beaten, accomplished something no other challenger was ever before able to do against Mr Wood. He completed two races.
