NEW VICARAGE PROPOSED.

REQUEST BEFORE COUNCIL. A letter from Blr 11. G. Bagnall, on behalf of All Saints’ Parish, came before last night’s meeting of the City Council asking for permission to erect a vicarage in wood. The cost, it was stated, would be in tire vicinity of £ISOO and the site would be approximately that occupied by the present vicarage, possibly a few feet further back from the Parish Hall than the present building. . The chief reason for the application to build in wood was stated to he the fact that the parish had not so much at stake if the building were in wood in case of earthquake. The All Saints’ parish authorities were also anxious to use their funds in the direction of solving the unemployment problem, and a brick structure would be beyond their financial capacity. The Blayor (Mr A. E. Blansford) asked if the building would be in the city’s “brick area.” The city engineer (Blr J. It. Hughes) replied that such was the case, but the fire risk was not . very great. The walls that were adjacent were all in brick and there was no wall on one side.

The Blayor moved that the application be granted subject to other conditions as laid, down in the city by-laws being complied with. Cr. G. Tremaine asked if it were not the case that in the past, when they had made such exceptions, they had stipulated that the outside walls should be constructed of non-combus-tible material?

The engineer said that course had been followed in the past where there had been any risk of fire. Cr. J. Hodgens opposed the request as it stood. He sought further information.

The Blayor moved that the application be referred to the works committee and this was agreed to.
