• The annual meeting of the Horowheuua County Patriotic Association was presided over by tfie Mayor (Mr P. W. Goldsmith). “Operations for the year have not been on a large scale; but still, useful work has been done, and assistance has been given in many instances deemed to be deserving, the sum of £97 having been distributed during the year for grants to soldiers or their dependants,’' said the jxtinual report. “During the year our association lias received £l4O from the National War Funds Council for subsidising wages, and returned men in various parts of the district have been able to earn double the amount of the grant through the subsidised system, the relief rate of pay being found in equal parts by the council and by the local emplo3’er. No demand has been made during the year for repayments of principal or interest, the activities in this respect being in recess until the prices of our primary products considerably improve. The amount standing on the books is £1655 3s 3d. No writing off lias yet been done and the amount named represents the face value of the loans. There are 33 of them, two of which are insignificant. Of tne remaining 31, three are over £IOO, nine exceed £SO but aro under £IOO, four are for £SO each, and the remaining 15 range from £lO to £45. When tilings improve, the majority of the men who have had loans will, 1 believe, honourably fulfil tlieir . obligations, repaying their loans as opportunity offers, so that sick and disabled men amongst their brethren may receive the assistance they need.” The management committee for the ensuing .year was elected as follows: Messrs P.
