PRELIMINARY MATCH RESULTS

LONDON, May 7. The following are the results of the preliminary matches played so far in the Davis Cup contest. Japan, the United States, Italy and Germany having secured wins : At Wiesbaden in the doubles Cramm and Jaenecke (Germany)'beat Shukri and Wahid (Egypt) 4—6, 6—4, B—6, 6—-4. Germany will now meet the winner of the Holland-Poland matches.

At The Hague, in the doubles Timmer and Diemerkool (Holland) beat Tloczynski and Hebda (Poland) 3 —6, G—l, 6—2, 6—3. At Florence, in the singles Morpurgo (Italy) beat Kukuljecic (Yugoslavia) 7— 5, 6—4, 6—3; Destefani (Italy) beat Pallada (Yugo-Slavia) 6 —l ” 6 —2, 6 —2. Italy will now meet the winner of the Belgium-Austria matches.

At Budapest, in the doubles Satoli and Nunoi (Japan) beat Gabrowitz and Zichy (Hungary) 6—o, 6—yl, C —2. Japan will now meet the winners of the Ireland-Denmark matches.

The United States won the first round of the North American zone when Lott and Van Rvn defeated Eduardo Mestre and Alfonso Unda, 0-0, 6—l, 7—5. In the first singles at Brussels, Artens (Austria) beat Deborman (Belgium), 4—6, 6 —2, 6 —4, 7—5.

POLAND ELIMINATED. Received May 8, 10.45 a.m. LONDON, May 7. The first round of the Davis Cup contest is continuing, the' additional results being as follow: Playing at Copenhagen, Jacobson (Denmark) heat McVeagh (Ireland), 3—6, 2—6, 6—4, B—6, 6—3; Rogers (Ireland) beat Ulrich (Denmark), 8-6, 6-2, 6—2. At The Hague, Timmer (Holland) beat Tlocvnski (Poland), 6—l, 3—6, 6—4, 3—6', 6—2. Poland was eliminated. At Brussels Matejka (Austria) beat Lacroix (Belgium), 6—3, 6—4, 6—2.

BOURNEMOUTH MATCHES. DOUBLES TO AUSTRALIA. LONDON, May 7. At Bournemouth in the hard court championships in the finals of the men's doubles Crawford nnd Turnbull (Australia) beat McGrath and Qmst (Australia), 6—l, 6—B, 4—6, 13—11, In the singles Perry, the nolder, beat Austin, 2—6, 7—5, 7—5, 6—2. In the women's singles Miss Round beat Miss Jacobs, 3—6, 6—2, 6—3.
