MANAWATU DRAINAGE BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu Drainage Board was held this morning, Mr i\. G. Mildon presiding. There were also present: Messrs I>. Prouse, It. Tanner, F. J. lUuseil, J. Collis, A. W. Hamlin and W. E. Thomas.

The financial statement showed general account payments for the past month at £IOSB Os 7d and receipts £1748 4s 9d; bank overdraft £652 9s 3d. No. 5 scheme wages refundable by the Unemployment Board amounted to £267 8s 9d. Unpaid rates stood at £499 19s 2d.

The overseer (Mr M. Wilson) reported on works carried out during the month as follows: —Fascine work: Mangaone Stream, completed. Drains cleaned: Carmody's to Lockwood Road, Leigh's. Farmers' Drain, Thompson's, Rutledge's, No. 1 Aorangi, Lower Aorangi Road, Farmers' Creek, Cohr's, Bunnythorpe-Kairanga. Road to Rongotea Road, No. 4 Lino to Rongotea Road, Ryman's Balsillie's, Whisky Creek to Rongotea Road, Factory Drain (Kairanga), Hanson's, Johansen's, Gil Hansen's, Government Reserve, Mitchell's, Prouse's, Buick's (Cloverlea), Shannon's, Wood's. Drains receiving attention: Bunnythorpo,Kairanga Road, Whiskey Creek from Manson's, Longburn-Rongotea Road, Whiskey Creek, Clausen's. At present thwe is an average of 140 men per week employed carrying out this-work under No. 5 scheme. The following summary of the board's public debt as at March 31, 1933 was presented : —Treasury loa.ns at 3i per cent., £18,780 17s 2d; Public Trust loans at 5 per cent., £480: Public Trust loans at 6 per cent., £SOOU, total, £5480; State Advances loan at 4i per cent., owing at 31,'d/a/. ilou 10s lOd less repaid, £3 2s 4d, balance, £177 8s 6d; debentures issued on open market at 6 per cent. £1250, 5| per cent. £2500, 5* per cent. £350 5 per cent £125, total £4225; grand total, £28,663 5s Bd. . ■ Arising out of the question of effecting certain restoration work to a part of the bank of the Mangaone stream,, the chairman reported that legal advice had been obtained from the boards solicters that the board ,• was entitled to effect necessary _ repairs on property under its jurisdiction. It was

decided to proceed with the work on the property in question. Mr M. McEwen waited on the meeting with a request to have the creek adjacent to his house a.t Aorangi cbaned. The board informed Mr Mc 7 Ewen that the position would be investigated and he would receive advice in due course. In reference to a request by Messrs Graham and Heed in regard to cleanine the creek at Aorangi, fol owing a "ifemsion it was decided that the whole board investigate the position and that three Mangaone members of th- Kairanga County Council be requested to assist. It was deeded also to notify the settlers concerned of the date of the investigation. Mr H. Hunt (Raiigiotu) waited on the board with a .request that it clean portions of a drain which cut through his property. Mr Tanner expressed the opinion that it was not the boards business to clean private drams. The matter was left in abeyance in the m TpSty consisting of Messrs Mildon Hamlin, Prouse and Colhs was appointed to inspect the area from the Kairanga dairy factory to tire Government reserve dram with a view to constructing further drains. . The chairman spoke m commendatory terms of the work of the engineer. Mr A. H. M. Wright Mr Wright is retiring from the board s service in the near future. Mr Wright, m reply, said he felt like a member of the board as be had served them in the capacity °r engineer for seventeen years. It the board ever required advice, the speaker stated, he would be only to willing, to supply it. ~„.-,. It was decided to inspect the drains affecting Mr James Fair's property at Kawa Creek and report at the next meeting.
