CRICKET DISPUTE

“GRACEFULLY ENDED.”

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph. —Copy rigli t.)

Received February 9, 12.25 p.m. LONDON, Feb. 8.

Londoners were startled at lunch time to read a poster declaring that

“Australia won't withdraw." Sir Stanley Jackson, a member of the committee of the M.C.C., said he considered this an unfair interpretation of the board’s cable which had gracefully ended the unfortunate controversy. “if the Press misunderstanding of the cable continues it might be necessary for the Marylebone Club to specially meet and draft a reply to the board, dissociating themselves from the newspaper interpretations,” he said.

Government circles, and particularly Mr J. H. Thomas, who has followed the cricket controversy more closely than is generally imagined, consider that the board’s reply adequately meets the Marylebone Club s last cable. The evening newspapers give prominence to England’s intentions to retain the leg theory. “You may take it as 1 definite that the Tests will be played,” said Jardine, replying to the Daily Mail’s telephone inquiry.

‘OUGHT TO END THE MATTER.”

Received February 9, 10.40 a.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 9. Official opinions on the Board of Control’s last cable to the Marylebone Club are to the effect that it ought to end the matter.
