Mr W. T. Cosgrave was elected for Cork. He polled 4000 fewer votes than at the last election. The Dublin correspondent of the London News-Clironicle says that unofficial returns of first preference votes indicate a clear over-all majority for Mr de Valera. As a sample of election eve propaganda, Mr de Valera’s organ, the Irish Press, published a page of worldwide good wishes, including a threecolumn facsimile of the Wellington Irish Republican Association’s cable: “Irish race in New Zealand wish you a sweeping victory.” SETBACK FOR PRO-TREATY PARTIES. LONDON, Jan. 26. As the Irish election results only began to be announced at midnight there was no Press comment in London, but the headlines show that they are regarded as a set-back for the protreaty parties. Some Dublin, reports already forecast a clear majority for Mr de Valera. The Daily Mail’s Dublin correspondent says that- the first results suggest that the Cosgraveites suffered from the activities of the New Centre Party. So far none of the latter have been elected.
