By a piece of good fortune the Feilding Borough Council will not be called upon to pay an increased amount on its interest on loan payments due to the higher rate of exchange, the . council having recently transferred the domicile of the loan it bolds with an insurance company from Sydney to Wellington. During the period the exchange rate between New Zealand and Australia was in favour of New Zealand, the council reaped considerable financial advantage from the domicile of its loan in Sydney, but on the exchange assuming a more level basis between the two countries a few months back, the council arranged with the insurance company to .have the loan transferred to Wellington. As the result of this move the council now not only gets the benefit of the compxdsorv reduction in interest charges as legislated for last year, but is immune from the effects of the artificial high exchange rate now ruling, it was stated to-day. COUNCIL VACANCY. By the death of the la.te Mr David Pryde, of Feilding, a vacancy occurs on the Fejlding Borough Council, but discussing the matter yesterday, the Mayor (Mr C. E. Taylor) said he ! did not intend to move that the vacant position be filled at present. It was pointed out that it is provided in the constitution -of the council that, where a vacancy occurs within six months of the date of the biennial election, the council may by motion decide not to fill the vacancy. Mr Taylor stated that in this case if the

council proceeded with a by-election the new councillor would only have two meetings to attend before the council’s term expired, so, having regard to this fact, it was Mr Taylor’s intention to move that the late Mr Pryde’s chair be left vacant until filled at the ordinary election. BOROUGH RATES. The Feilding Borough Council has collected to date the sum of £6620 in rates out of a total collectable rate of £14,870. Close on £IOOO has been received at the borough offices this week and considering that the 10 per cent penalty on unpaid rates is not imposed until during the first week in February, the response is claimed to be very satisfactory. NOTES. Enquiries at the Feilding private hospital this morning elicited the information that, although he is still dangerously ill, there was a brighter outlook in the condition of Master Patrick Shortall, who was seriously injured in a motor collision on Sunday.
