ELECTIONS IN IRELAND.

MR COSGRAVE RETURNED. Received January 26, 1 p.m. DUBLIN, Jan. 25. In the Irish Free State general election Mr W. T. Cosgrave, Leader of the Opposition, w r as returned. The Fianna Fail, Mr do Valera’s party, had 100 candidates in the field, Labour 22, the Cosgrave Party 85, and the Farmers and Ratepayers’ League 25. There were 11 Independents, of whom Mr Anthony, a former member of the Dail, definitely supports Mr Cosgrave. The number of parties makes the counting under the proportional representation system laborious, and consequently the results are slow in coming to hand.

Prior to the dissolution of the Dail on January 3 the strength of parties was: Fianna Fail, 71; Cosgrave Purty 57; Independents, 17; Labour, 7.
